What is Rhodiola rosea?

The Greek physician Dioscorides (AD 40–90) first documented this plant in De Materia Medica, renaming it from Rodia riza to Rhodiola rosea, a name inspired by the rose-like aroma of its freshly cut roots. Also known as Golden Root or Rose Root, Rhodiola rosea is a revered adaptogen used for centuries in traditional medicine across the globe.

Emerging scientific research defines adaptogens as plants that help the body manage stress and restore balance after both mental and physical strain. Adaptogens act on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which regulates our stress response and contributes to overall homeostasis.

To be classified as an adaptogen, a plant must:

1. Be safe at normal doses.
